Can someone be diagnosed with sleep apnea if awake during night? I’ve had problems sleeping well for years and been prescribed sleeping pills to exercise to weight loss. I’m 200lbs 6 2 and sleep mostly on my back and have allergies and tinnitus . I don’t have gasps or shortness of breath or get startled from not breathing. I usually sleep about 2 -3 hours. Recent my new primary care physician suggested a sleep study. I picked up the test kit ( finger oxygen monitor, chest belt, nose tube). I set up kit and went to bed. I could not sleep all night but just laid there for the equipment to record everything. Results came back the I had several hours of sleep and reached REM. Ahi was 8.8. All this while awake.
Hey Mark, sorry to hear about your sleep troubles.
That’s very odd that you didn’t sleep at all and the test results said you did. I’m not sure what at-home test you used, but generally these tests will show if you didn’t sleep. That being said, errors are certainly possible.
Did you have your doctor look at your results? Where did you get the test? I would talk over your results with a professional and see if further testing is necessary. If you got your test online, I know most of these companies connect you with an MD after a positive result.
Regardless, 2-3 hours is very low, so I would prioritize getting to the bottom of your results. If it turns out not to be Sleep Apnea, I would look into insomnia treatments such as CBT-i, and really work on having optimal sleep hygiene.
