Buying a new mattress topper instead of a mattress?

I have a spring mattress that I bought five years ago at mattressfirm. It’s quite firm and I feel a lot of pressure on my joints when I sleep on it, sometimes I even wake up with some back pain. I’ve been doing some research and am looking at memory foam toppers that might make my mattress softer and more comfortable. Is this a good idea? or do you think I need to buy a whole new mattress? It would be nice not to have to dish out on a pricey mattress.

I have a viscosoft mattress topper that I really love, but it’s starting to fall apart a little after a couple years.

Yea I’ve had a good experience with mattress toppers. Me and my husband purchased a really firm latex mattress because we thought we liked firm beds. Turns we needed something softer. We get a Turmerry latex mattress topper and it softened it up quite a bit.

Thanks for the replies! It’s hard to tell if I need a new mattress, I don’t believe it’s sagging or anything. I think I’m gonna try out a topper and see how that goes.

Hello PoppieRoach, thanks for posting! You can definitely get a mattress topper to change up the feel of your bed. Something to consider though: The average mattress lasts around 7 years, and cheap ones last even less, so it’s possible you’re just in need of a new mattress. If you find your mattress is sagging and your having some back pain from waking up, you probably just want to buy a new mattress. A topper changes the surface feel, but it doesn’t provide the support that a mattress does.
