Help choosing mattress for someone who spends a lot of time in bed

My brother is in a group home and his bed is his primary piece of furniture in his room. He spends a fair amount of time watching TV from his bed, in addition to sleeping. He weighs around 220 and is 6’3". He needs a new mattress. The last one was a Beautyrest Silver and it only lasted 3 years. Maybe because of his size and the fact that he spends more time on it than your average person. I’d like to get him something this time that will last longer than that! I’ve read loads of recommendations from Consumer Reports, NapLab, etc but then the comments on Reddit scare me off. Any suggestions for someone in his situation?

Hi, Absolutely! Finding the right mattress for someone who is both tall and heavier, and who spends a lot of time in bed, can be tricky—but totally doable with a few key considerations a was able to find:

  1. Durability & Support Matter Most
At 6’3” and 220 lbs, your brother needs a mattress that won’t sag quickly. Hybrid mattresses (a mix of coils + foam) or high-density memory foam models generally hold up better for heavier/taller sleepers than all-foam beds with low-density layers. Latex mattresses are also extremely durable and supportive, though they can be pricier.

  2. Edge Support is Important
Since he spends a lot of time sitting or lounging in bed, make sure to get something with strong edge support so the perimeter doesn’t break down quickly.

  3. Medium-Firm to Firm Feel
Medium-firm to firm is often best for larger individuals because it helps maintain spinal alignment and prevents that “hammock” feeling over time.

  4. Brands Known for Durability

    • Saatva Classic (luxury hybrid, great edge support, firmer options, very durable)

    • WinkBed Plus (designed specifically for heavier sleepers, extra-reinforced coils)

    • Helix Plus (built for taller/heavier users, reinforced support layers)

    • Natural Latex Options like PlushBeds or Avocado (very durable but can be on the firmer side)

  5. Expect 7–10 Years from the Right Mattress
A good hybrid or latex mattress should last far longer than 3 years if it’s the right construction for his body type and usage.

  6. Consider a Sturdy Base
If he’s using a basic frame or box spring, upgrading to a platform or adjustable base can also extend the life of the mattress by providing better support.

If you’re looking for the “buy it once and don’t worry for years” route, I’d lean toward a high-quality hybrid like the WinkBed Plus or Saatva Classic in the firm option. They’re built for heavier daily use and are far more likely to last than a Beautyrest Silver. Hope this helps!
