Perimenopause Insomnia

Been trying to deal with this problem for over a year. I have been taking progesterone for a year and have tried various other vitamins and minerals ans nothing seems to solve the problem. I have trouble falling asleep, sometimes I have trouble both falling and staying asleep. Currently taking 300mg of progesterone and have been “diagnosed” as having estrogen dominant. When I switched from 200 to 300mg of progesterone my sleep improved for a month, now I am back to where I started. Anyone else??

Hi Brittany, I feel for you. Insomnia is really awful. There are many strategies to improve sleep, and obviously sleep is affected by medical conditions. I don’t know what you’ve tried to help your sleep, besides progesterone, but the good news is there are lots of paths. If you’re not familiar with the term “sleep hygiene”, look it up. It describes factors that affect sleep, which is regulated by a kind of clock in the brain that regulates our sleep - wake cycles. Good sleep hygiene includes keeping consistent waking and bedtimes (not sleeping in - so hard!), avoiding naps if they interfere with your sleep, getting exposure to bright light in the morning and avoiding blue light late at night, avoiding caffeine 12 hrs before bed and keeping the bedroom dark and cool. Exercise helps. Try tracking these points for a while; it may take time to find out which help. The consistent wake up time is extremely important. And hard. Hope this helps some. Good luck!
